L-Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide made from the amino acids glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Scientific literature describes glutathione as one of the body's principal intracellular antioxidants, helping cells maintain redox balance and manage reactive molecules produced during normal metabolism.

Beyond its direct antioxidant role, glutathione is used by enzyme systems including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These pathways are studied in relation to peroxide breakdown, cellular protection, metabolic processing, protein regulation and normal immune activity.

Glutathione is also investigated within skin biology because antioxidant balance and melanin production are influenced by redox processes. L-Glutathione functions mainly through a cycle between its reduced form, GSH, and its oxidised form, GSSG. In its reduced form, glutathione can donate electrons to reactive molecules and peroxides, helping limit oxidative reactions within cells.

Glutathione peroxidase enzymes use GSH when converting peroxides into less reactive products. Glutathione reductase then helps recycle oxidised glutathione back into its reduced form using NADPH, allowing the antioxidant cycle to continue.

Glutathione S-transferase enzymes also use glutathione when processing certain compounds for removal from cells. These mechanisms describe established biological roles of glutathione, but they do not by themselves establish the effects or outcomes of a particular finished formulation.

Glutathione helps maintain the balance between oxidants and antioxidants inside cells. In its reduced form, it can take part directly in reactions that neutralise reactive molecules generated during normal metabolism.
